Ohio National Guard Working in Iraq to Offer Helicopter Oasis Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version
Sunday, September 06 2009 @ 06:35 PM
Contributed by: Cleveland

Cleveland NewsBAGHDAD, Iraq -- The refuelers here don't climb over walls like those on a racecar pit crew, but they do run past six-foot cement T-walls that protect one of the forward area refueling points here.

The refueling points are important to Army aviation units throughout Iraq.

"A FARP expands the combat power of an aviation task force," said Sgt. 1st Class Chip Berg. "It gives the commander the flexibility in his mission assignments. It buys him time." Berg, London, Ohio, is the Riflestock FARP noncommissioned officer in charge.

Like pit crew members, every refueling Soldier has a specific job - a Soldier to refuel the helicopter, a Soldier to man the fire extinguishers, and a Soldier to run the fuel trucks that pump the petroleum.

Berg praised his Soldiers, who are with Company E, 1st Battalion, 137th Assault Helicopter Battalion, and who are under his command.

"Fortunately with the crew I got, they know what their jobs are," said Berg. "You don't have to direct them and tell them what to do. They know where to go, and they know what to do."

Though Berg refers to his Soldiers as his crew, he doesn't compare them to a racecar pit crew.

"Our times savings aren't in seconds; our time savings are in minutes," he said.

Cleveland NewsConstruction workers in Cleveland face a Herculean task -- moving the 70-million-ton Inner Belt Bridge 4 inches to the west, officials say.

The west end of the span, which carries Interstate 90 over the Cuyahoga River, will be raised off its piers, set on greased plates and then jacked the inches necessary to get it realigned properly, The Plain Dealer reported Wednesday. Once in place, the bridge will be re-bolted to the piers.

The project is to start Friday night and take several days to complete. Most of the work is to be done at night so traffic interruptions should be minimized, officials say.

Cleveland NewsPNC from Pittsburgh uses bailout funds to buy Cleveland based National City.

From the AP" PNC Financial Services Group Inc., which acquired Baltimore's Mercantile Bankshares last year, said yesterday that it is acquiring Cleveland-based National City Corp. for $5.58 billion, becoming the first bank to use fresh investments from a federal bailout program to make an acquisition.

The deal came within hours of PNC Financial receiving approval for $7.7 billion in cash from the government under the $700 billion government program aimed at relieving the continuing credit crisis."

Why are we using tax payer dollars to close banks and put people out of work? Why no infuse that $7.7 into National City to save jobs in Cleveland.

National City was Ohio's largest bank, our leaders the Senate, George Voinovich need to step up and correct this.
