Bay Village Ohio's Westerly Elementary School student Carly Goebel achieved a perfect score in the Ohio Achievement Test OAT math test scoring a perfect 521 out 0f 521. Carly loves math, reading and learning. This score put Carly in the top percentage of all 3rd graders in the state of Ohio. Carly learned to love math by using it everyday at school and at home. Westerly Elementary uses Everyday Mathematics from the University of Chicago. She credits her parents and teachers for helping her.

I love This School Tour

JUST ANNOUNCED - The I Love This School Tour with Billy Craig is set to begin the first week of November in Cleveland, Ohio.

Created and produced by All Things Media and imusiccd.com, this age appropriate high-energy musical journey is filled with songs, laughter and original characters like Super Sam the guitar man, School Ja Boy, the hip hop rapper man and ZIGGY, the classic rocker dude. This show will not only inspire and challenge kids with positive messages and fun, but it set to be the concert event of the year for elementary schools!

“We’re so excited to roll this show out to kids all across America. It’s designed to really open their eyes and ears to some great stuff and reinforce what they already know from school and their parents,” says Brad Johnson spokesman for All Things Media.

“Billy’s a fantastic guitarist and will be switching on and off from acoustic to electric guitars performing songs like I Love This School, Keep Your Hands to Yourself, Bullies Ain't Cool, Reading Rocks! and Teachers Rule the School. When the Cleveland schools unveil their revised building plan next month, a new Cleveland School of the Arts will be included. District officials say the 30-million-dollar project will be linked to the renovated John Hay High School on the city's east side by park-like green space. The arts school is one of the Cleveland schools' highest-performing, with a 98-percent graduation rate. A private group of supporters will raise some of the funds for construction.

Monthly Artistic Workshops To Be Taught by New York and Cleveland Professionals
(Cleveland, New York—May 2007) This summer company members from the New York theatre company Slightly Askew will invite high school students from all over the Cleveland area to participate in artistic workshops in film, photography, sound design, costuming, movement, music, and animation using as inspiration the historical Lakewood neighborhood known by locals as Birdtown. History or “ghetto?” Mystery or “washed up?” Slightly Askew will challenge its students to penetrate one of Cleveland Ohio's oldest ethnic neighborhoods to discover answers to those questions.

The Ohio House of Representatives passage of the State Budget yesterday was a significant victory for school choice and a reaffirmation of the Legislature's ongoing commitment to expanding school options for parents. By a historic 97-0 vote, the House of Representatives passed a state budget that unanimously supports charter school growth and the Ed Choice school voucher program.

"The outcry from parents, students, and educators who support school choice clearly made a significant impact upon state lawmakers," stated Melanie Elsey, Legislative Director of the Ohio Roundtable and Ohio Freedom Forum. "The parents who came to the House and met with Speaker Husted and other members played a huge role in this victory. Whenever lawmakers have the opportunity to look at the real faces of school choice they quickly understand the value and urgency of giving parents the opportunity to choose the best schools for their children."

A six-week intensive tutoring program is paying dividends for Cleveland students who come from Spanish-speaking families. Over 80-percent of the 25 elementary school students showed significant improvement in language arts skills, and 75-percent showed such improvement in math skills. An Akron-based charter school operator bankrolled the program.

Child Health. The U.S. Postal Service continues its tradition of drawing attention to important social awareness issues with this stamp promoting children’s health. Art director Carl T. Herrman and stamp artist Craig Frazier show a silhouette of a physician placing a stethoscope on a child’s chest. The selvage text is as follows: "Balanced Diet and Exercise, Regular Medical Checkups, Car Seats Each Time and Caring for Our Future."
