Cleveland Browns

Cardiac Kids Revisited; Browns Stun Jaguars  By Mark Riley

Quincy Morgan snatched a 50 yard prayer from the arm of Tim Couch with no time remaining on the game clock, and finally, the football gods of replay smiled on Cleveland, as the Browns defeated the Jacksonville Jaguars, 21-20.

"I thought I had seen everything there was to see in a football game", beamed Butch Davis, "but I guess I hadn't".  Phil Dawson nailed the extra point, moving the Browns to 7-6 and to within 1/2 game of Pittsburgh, who were spanked by the expansion Houston Texans 24-6.

The Jaguars had moved ahead 17-14 on Danny Boyd's field goal with 2:32 left in the game, and appeared to have the game wrapped up when Akin Ayodele intercepted Couch a couple of plays later and returned it to the Browns 24 yd. line. However, the Browns were able to hold the Jaguars to another field goal and set to the table for the drama with 52 ticks on the clock.

An unbelievably short kick gave the Browns the ball near midfield, and after a sack and 8yd run, Couch ( 21/35 264 yds. 2TDs and 2 Interceptions), threw the ball to Morgan who had single coverage in the end zone. Miracle complete. In the words of nationally syndicated sports talker Jim Rome, "Scoreboard, deal with it!" The TD was the second of the day for Morgan, who also had a 60 yd. catch for a TD in the third quarter. He ended his day with 3 catches for 118 yds.

Sudden phenom William Green was, for the 3rd straight week, remarkable, rushing for 119yds. on 26 carries, including 1 TD, and adding 25 more on 3 receptions.

Up next for the Browns, a home game against Peyton Manning, Edgerin James, Marvin Harrison and the Indianapolis Colts. Perhaps we should ring Cleveland Browns Stadium in blue and white so the Browns will think they are at an away game, since they obviously play better on the road (5-2) than at home(2-4).

Either way, the Browns MUST continue to win to have any shot at the playoffs. Several teams who were also vying for one of the Wild card spots, Buffalo, Baltimore, Denver, and the afore mentioned Indianapolis Colts, all lost today, assisting the Browns on their playoff quest. Lets hope that the home field gods smile on the Browns next Sunday.
